The area surrounding Jurong Lake Gardens used to be mangrove swamp forests. In 1968, a Jurong Park committee was set up towards the development of a park which includes a green belt with landscaped gardens, a lake and open spaces. Furthermore three artificial islands were created on the lake for the Chinese Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Tropical Garden. On 4 April 2008, the Urban Redevelopment Authority announced a masterplan to transform the area around Jurong Lake to a unique lakeside destination for business and leisure in the next 10 to 15 years. The GIF animation shows a recent screenshot of Google maps capturing the Jurong Lake Gardens and its surrounding, with a juxtaposed aerial map from 1947.
